Defense Department Report Finds Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Potential Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be released later this week.
