A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
