Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
