This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for time.
This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
